4 Years On – The Fourth Anniversary
August 05, 2007. That day almost four years ago where everything began. Nine girls, with different backgrounds, varied talents, unique personalities.
As they stepped onto the stage of Inkigayo, it was as though they had stepped Into the New World.
Taeyeon. Jessica. Sunny. Tiffany. Hyoyeon. Yuri. Sooyoung. Yoona. Seohyun.
They came together as one, with lofty dreams and aspirations, to be the best in the industry, the top of the world.
And they’ve done it. SONEs have all bore testament to their extensive list of awards, accolades, and records. We have witnessed the popularity and success of these nine girls all over the world, whether it is in their home country, in the rest of Asia, in the Americas, or even in Europe and Australia. This year’s theme, “Global Generation”, is truly apt to describe their feats this year. Having conquered 5 continents, perhaps there’ll be a day when we see ‘Girls’ Generation Live in Johannesburg’, or even a concert at one of the research stations in Antarctica, as far-fetched as it sounds. Maybe a little Soshi is all that those scientists on the frozen land need to heat things up a little.
Any SONE worth their salt would know their backgrounds and the hard work, dedication and precious teenage years the girls have put in into fulfilling this dream.
Taeyeon’s story of how she and her father used to drive two hours every weekend up to Seoul for vocal lessons. Tiffany’s memories of how she had to persuade her father to let her come to Korea, to prove to him her passion as an artiste. Hyoyeon’s past about how she was misunderstood and reprimanded when she was just a back-up dancer. And Sooyoung’s first attempt at trying to make it in Japan as part of Route 0.
They all had years as a trainee when things were new and difficult, when there was jealousy and competition, when there was bleak uncertainty as to whether they would ever debut.
But they’ve made it, and here they stand today as top girl group in Korea, and as up-and-rising stars worldwide.
And what was it that brought them this far? Their catchy songs and popular dance moves, yes. Their individual talents and distinct personalities, as well. But there is something else which I think many SONEs love about these nine girls. How they can shine as performers and artistes individually is amazing, but it is when all nine of them stand on that stage as one, that is truly spectacular.
Each fan will have their own biases, as that is undoubtedly part of human nature. But fans like the girls as one entity, as one SNSD. The Soshi Bond is what glues the girls together and keeps them going, but it is also what fans appreciate and love about them all. The girls’ closeness and ties to each other is something unrivalled by many other kpop groups out there. OT9 <3<3.
In ending this post, I would like to leave a quote I think communicates perfectly what is success, and how the girls have achieved it.
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the
affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child or a
redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you
have lived. This is to have succeeded. -Ralph Waldo Emerson, American poet
I may not have been with you since the Beginning, but I will be there until the end, till Forever.
Happy 4th Anniversary, SNSD.
